The year 2020 has meant sweeping changes in lifestyle for just about everybody on planet Earth. We here at Four Jandals are certainly no exception to this.
We have been doing a lot of soul searching. We still firmly support the digital nomad cause and think that it’s wonderful that this existed, and will probably exist again soon.
In the meantime, we’ve not only learned to be thankful, but we’ve also learned to appreciate the other side of things.
The facts are that there are a lot of big advantages to staying put in one place, just as there are to running all over the world discovering new places and new experiences.
Here’s a quick list of things that you have to stay put in one place to take advantage of:
Have a proper kitchen
The foodie arc, no matter how much you love restaurants, eventually is going to take you back to your own kitchen. And, while you are travelling, there is no such thing as “your own kitchen”. The nice thing about being in one place is you can (finally?) have your own kitchen set up for serious cooking in a way that no Airbnb can possibly ever be.
We wrote an article back in the day about how to make good coffee everywhere, but there’s a difference between good and the absolute best you can get your hands on!
Even down to the details, like having a proper backsplash to make cleaning up after quicker and more easily, cooking in your own kitchen is bound to be better. Not to mention being able to get to know your own stove and oven, since everyone cooks a little bit differently, sometimes very differently.
Have solid internet
In today’s world, wifi is the order of the day. The truth is, wifi is absolutely not the best way to connect to the internet.
Unfortunately for the traveler, in hotels or Airbnbs, a proper cable connection to the Ethernet is almost not to be found.
When you’re in your own space, you can have the best router you can afford, the best internet connection you can afford, and you can connect to it with a cable and not be affected by random changes in the air molecules.
In short, when you’re at home, the quality of your internet is in your hands again.
Live in and build your own spaces
We never realized until we got back home how tired we were of living in other people’s spaces. They were designed by and for other people, and we were just making do with them. No matter where we went, it was going to be the same story.
Just as it is with the internet, if you are at home, you can customize, especially if you own your home/land. From simply buffing the floors to building something huge and crazy you have tons of options to make a living space exactly the way you want it, especially over time.
