Barcelona is the Catalonian capital that has a rich history, delicious cuisine, gorgeous Mediterranean landscape and, of course, that beautiful Spanish sun. Despite its size — the city boasts over 1.5 million residents — Barcelona is totally doable for a weekend stay. You can relax, see the sights and maybe even come home with a bit of a tan. Here is a weekend itinerary for Barcelona for you to explore this European mecca or just book cheap ferries to Spain.
A weekend itinerary for Barcelona
Barceloneta beach
Barcelona breaks wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the gorgeous Barceloneta beach. Both summer and winter visitors will enjoy this stretch of the Mediterranean as its beauty is truly undeniable. You can lounge on the soft sand, capture the picture-perfect views, sunbathe with a good book, and go swimming in the Mediterranean’s clear blue water.
When you’re ready to stroll back through civilization, explore some of the markets in the Barceloneta neighbourhood. You’ll find locals happily chatting to each other, gorgeous produce on display and some of the freshest fish and seafood you’ll ever see — perfect if you’re staying in self-catering accommodation. It’s also a chance to try out your Spanish!
Ruta del Modernisme
Barcelona is a city known for its architecture. Explore its rich architectural history with a walking tour — the ‘Ruta del Modernisme’ — when you’re in town. Featuring work by famous local architects, including the renowned Antoni Gaudí, you can stroll through the ‘world capital of modernism’ at your own pace. And best of all? It’s free!
La Sagrada Familia
Speaking of Antoni Gaudí, you really must see the Sagrada Familia when you’re in town. This spectacular Roman Catholic church, and UNESCO World Heritage Site, embodies gothic architecture to a T. Gaudi’s use of nature is evident in the most creative ways, with a forest-like region, a very natural looking Nativity façade and tortoises at the base of several columns.
Montjuïc cable car
For more amazing, panoramic views of the city, head to Montjuïc Hill and ride the gondolas. Each of the recently refurbished cable cars seats eight people, making it the perfect activity to do as a family or with a group of friends. You’ll see the city and port in all its glory, and you can put your feet up as well! The cable car closes for a period of time every year, from the end of January to the beginning of March, so keep this in mind when planning your trip.
Watch the football
Finally, football fans will delight in watching some of the world’s best footballers in action. Don’t consider yourself a huge fan? You may want to go just to take in the spectacle of it all. The city of Barcelona is home to two top teams — Espanyol and FC Barcelona — and the atmosphere at both these teams’ home venues is electric. Look into getting tickets in advance of your trip, as it’s often a full house.
So, with stunning architecture, beautiful beaches and a chance to see Messi in action, Barcelona is the place to be!
