We’re only just beginning to appreciate the depths of the ocean’s wonders, and many people are now opting to learn how to scuba dive in order to appreciate the breath taking underwater scenery around the globe. Instead of traipsing through an overcrowded Venice, or competing with hundreds of others to reach the top of Everest, why not embark on a peaceful underwater excursion? The following are some of the coolest underwater attractions in the world.
Baia Archaeological Park
If you’re planning a trip to Naples, you can’t forego a trip to the Baia Archaeological Park. Due to the ground at Baia sinking due to seismic activity, a number of fascinating archaeological structures are now underwater. From a luxury villa, to a port, there are currently seven sites in Baia that can be dived and explored. Those who don’t want to dive can opt to snorkel or take a tour on a glass bottomed boat. There are a variety of companies in the region who offer these tours.
The Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park
Located off the coast of Western Grenada, in the Caribbean Sea, the Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park was designed and created by British artist Jason de Cairnes Taylor. The park opened to the public in 2006, and is now widely considered to be the largest underwater park of its kind. Visitors to the park will get to learn more about Grenada’s culture, folklore, and colourful history. Located in shallow waters, divers and snorkelers are both welcome to explore the park. Glass bottomed boat tours are also available.
Cenote Dos Ojos
A variety of cenotes (caverns) are found all over the Riviera Maya in Mexico, with Cenote Dos Ojos being the most well known. The name ‘Dos Ojos’ means ‘two eyes’ in English, and it basically refers to the two neighbouring cenotes which are connected by a large cavern. One of the largest underwater cave systems, visitors will be able to marvel at the crystal clear waters, and the stalactites that hang from the ceilings. Especially suited to divers (as they will be able to explore further), parts of the cenote can also be explored by snorkelers. It is, however, advisable to hire a guide.
The Neptune Memorial Reef
Located off the coast of Florida, and said to be the largest manmade reef in the world, The Neptune Memorial Reef is not your average underwater ecosystem. No, instead it is an underwater cemetery, operated by the Neptune Society. This is currently the only place in the world where you can have your ashes buried in an underwater plot. Visitors to the reef can arrive by boat, and snorkelers and divers are both welcomed. Inspired by Atlantis, the lion statues, and elaborate cement columns will definitely be unlike anything you have ever seen before.
Whether you are an experienced scuba diver or not, so long as you don’t mind getting your feet wet, you can explore the above attractions. Give them a try – it’s a whole new world down there, and it needs to be seen to be believed.
