Kauai, considered by many to be the most scenic of the Hawaiian Islands, offers an abundance of activities and attractions for nature lovers. The following is an example 5 day Kauai itinerary for outdoor enthusiasts who want to see the best the island has to offer. Keep in mind that it would take many weeks to explore all the hikes, waterfalls, beaches and other attractions Kauai has to offer, so don’t limit yourself to a short vacation if you can afford more time.
The below itinerary assumes you’re based in the Poipu resort (Kauai’s largest) on the south shore of the island, but Kauai also has many great accommodation choices on the north and east coast. This guide to Kauai condos offers guidance on where to stay.
The Perfect 5 Day Kauai Itinerary
Day 1 – Recoup and Relax
Grand Hyatt Kauai
After a five and half hour flight from the North American west coast it’s time to recoup and orient yourself. Become acquainted with the farmer’s market schedule – there is one almost every day on different parts of the island. The farmers’ markets offer interesting locally grown fruits and vegetables.
If you’re really hungry, consider going for a buffet breakfast at the Grand Hyatt hotel. The hotels grounds also make for a pleasant stroll.
Go for a swim at Poipu Beach Park. Remember the UV index in Hawaii is very high, so limit your time in the sun for the first few days.
Visit Spouting Horn Park in Poipu, an interesting blowhole formed by lava rocks.
Across from Spouting Horn is the Allerton and McBryde Botanical Garden. Some scenes from the movie Jurassic Park were filmed here. You can expect to spend a couple hours at the gardens.
Day 2 – Waimea Canyon
The Perfect 5 Day Kauai Itinerary – Waimea Canyon
Waimea Canyon, coined the Grand Canyon of the pacific, is one of Kauai’s premier attractions. The Canyon is best visited in the morning before afternoon clouds roll in. There are many hiking options in the area, but one of the most accessible and spectacular is the Pihea trail. The trail overlooks a beautiful and remote north shore valley. You can hike up to several hours, but those who prefer a shorter walk will still see the best views at the start of the hike.
Also on the west side of the island is Hawaii’s biggest beach, Polihale State Park. The beach is in a remote location and accessed via a long dirt road. Budget at least 3 hours for this excursion, and be sure to prepare by bringing food and drinks. The area is noted for being especially hot. Since a visit to the Canyon can quickly turn into a full day excursion you may want to save Polihale for another day.
Other attractions on the west side of the island include Waimea town, the remains of an old Russian Fort (Elisabeth), Hanapepe town, Kekaha beach park, and a coffee plantation. Hanapepe is best visited on a Friday night when they have their art night.
Day 3 – Beaches and Waterfalls
5 Day Kauai Itinerary – Beaches and Snorkelling
Consider a beach day at Kiahuna beach, snorkeling at Lawai beach, boogie boarding at Brennecke beach, or sun bathing at Shipwrecks beach. The beautiful Mahaulepu coastal trail begins at Shipwrecks beach for those who want to do some hiking, or you can drive to Gillins beach for exploring. All these beaches are in Poipu.
In the afternoon visit Kapaa town on the east side of the island which has a number of restaurants and tourist shops. Along the way stop by two road side waterfalls – Wailua Falls and Opaekaa falls.
Day 4 – Napali Coast
Depending on the season you can either do a boat trip along Kauai’s famous Napali coast (summer), or go on a whale watching tour off the coastal waters of Poipu (winter).
Another alternative is a helicopter tour of the island. This is the best way to see Kauai’s remote interiors including many hidden waterfalls.
Day 5 – The North Shore
Perfect 5 Day Kauai Itinerary – The North Shore
Explore Kauai’s majestic north shore. Driving north, stop at the Kilauea lighthouse which offers beautiful coastal views. The lighthouse is also a bird sanctuary.
The north shore features miles of beaches. The north shore’s premier beach is Hanalei Bay, and Hanalei town is the perfect stop for lunch or dinner. There’s also an interesting selection of tourist shops. Hanalei is also one of the best places on the island to take surfing lessons.
The highway ends 30 minutes past Hanalei at Ke’e beach, at the start of the Napali coast. Depending on ocean conditions you may be able to snorkel at Ke’e, or you can hike a section of the famous 11 mile long Kalalau trail. Beautiful views emerge after a steep 20 minute hike.
The St. Regis hotel in Princeville offers one of the most spectacular views in Hawaii and is a great place to view the sunset on your way back home.
