New York isn’t all about towering skyscrapers and performing theatres; there is much more to the Big Apple than what the common eye perceives. I intend to help you take a look at the top offbeat adventures in New York, and tell you how you can experience it.

Outdoor adventures in New York: City Guide

Inwood Hill Park

The last remaining bit of greenery from the founding times of the city, the Inwood Hill Park is the best place to begin your off road adventure. Home to some of the oldest trees in NY and to some interesting fauna, the 196-acre park is surely worth a visit. With its magnificent views, and a silent uncrowded environment, the park will sure put you on a spell. A paved pathway runs through the entire stretch of the park, and you just need a pair of good walking shoes to explore it. Also don’t forget to bring a pair of good binoculars to avoid missing out on watching some exotic birds as well.

Wolfe’s Pond Park

Although New York has plenty of space for bikers to pedal around, none are as quite endearing as Staten Island. The forgotten borough with its steep terrain, covered with dense forests is one of the best places for bikers to try out their gear. Especially, a visit to the southern stretch – the Wolfe’s Pond Park will definitely be worth your time. The combination of flat and rocky terrain makes the park ideal for riders of all ages. Also the dense forests, the sandy beaches and the glacial ponds can pose interesting challenges and a good run for your cycle insurance as well. There are also a number of tailored course tracks that offer interesting time trial challenges as well.

Gowanus Canal

Declared as one of the most polluted water bodies in the United States, this might be the last place I’d have ever wanted to dive into, though I now thank my fortune for having been here. Canoeing here is totally harmless, and there are a number of operators who will help you experience such a ride as well. Experience the nostalgic side of Brooklyn, and explore the city via the canal on a canoe, and feel the character of this most happening borough. You might see some aquatic life on the canal, but that doesn’t mean the water is any safe, so refrain from even touching it.

Prospect Park

The top contender to the Central Park’s legendary status in NYC, Prospect Park is one of the most beautiful pieces of greenery I’ve ever seen in my life. Located strategically on the Atlantic Flyway, through which thousands of birds migrate each year, the park witnesses some of the most beautiful birds visiting the country. If you’re in the mood for a relaxing afternoon, then this is the perfect place for you to be, grab a cycle or even walk to the Audubon center on Saturdays during mid-noon, to take a free guided tour around the avian hotspots of the park. Also when you’re at it, don’t forget to get some fresh baked cinnamon buns from the nearby farmer’s market.
