So you’ve decided to book your first cruise – great decision. A cruise is a fantastic way to spend your holiday, especially if you choose somewhere as beautiful as the South Pacific. However, don’t let your first experience be a negative one. Cruises are the perfect way to see the world, but there are a number of mistakes that first timers regularly make that can seriously affect your enjoyment of the experience.
Here are five classic newbie mistakes to avoid when you plan and go on your cruise.
1. Not Researching Cruises Properly
There are so many cruises available these days on websites like cruisesalefinder.com.au that it can be easy to just choose the first one you find. However, proper research can really pay off. If you don’t spend time looking, you could very easily choose the wrong cruise and then live to regret it.
The South Pacific is a huge area and there are many different options, with different ships and itineraries providing a huge range to choose from. Things to consider include the type of cruise (e.g. family orientated), the style of the cruise line, the prices, the places visited on the cruise, the length of the cruise and more.
2. Overindulging on the Cruise
Overindulging is very easy to do on a cruise. There is so much food and drink available at all times that the temptation can prove too much, but you could soon find yourself feeling bad a few days in – and if you suffer from seasickness, it won’t help at all.
Try to limit what you eat while still enjoying yourself. By all means try out all of the delicious foods available, but moderation is the key word. Consider eating your meals in the dining room rather than at the buffet, and ask about healthier options. Eat lots of fruit and drink lots of water as well, and try to keep track of what you are eating.
3. Paying More Than You Should
It’s never fun to find out that you are paying too much for your cruise, but that’s what could happen if you just buy the first cruise you see.
Be flexible on the dates that you travel, as well as the cabin you book, as these could both help to save you some money. Consider travelling in the off-peak season, and look around for special offers to see what you can find.
4. Choosing the Wrong Room
Be careful when you choose your cabin and don’t make the mistake of thinking that they are all the same. Cabins come in a wide range of shapes and sizes, and if you book one that is not suitable for your group, you could regret it when the cruise begins.
Some cabins have windows and balconies, some are very large, others are quite small – some even have a butler service. So think carefully before choosing yours.
5. Not Taking the Correct Precautions
Don’t ruin your cruise by getting ill unnecessarily. Always practice good hygiene by washing your hands regularly. Viruses can spread easily on a cruise ship, so don’t let yourself get ill and ruin your holiday.
Also take precautions against sunburn, which is a serious risk in hot and sunny tropical locations. Wear plenty of sunscreen when outside, and keep your head covered with a hat.
Also, if you get seasick, make sure you visit your doctor before you go on your cruise to see if they can recommend a medication like meclizine or scopolamine.
Avoid These Mistakes and Have a Great Time
It is easy to make any of these five mistakes, but they really can affect your enjoyment of the cruise. Don’t let them affect your trip, and instead keep them in mind when you plan your cruise. Avoid these and you stand a better chance of enjoying your first cruise – then you’ll be desperate to plan your next one as soon as you return home.
