MarineLand Theme Park
Though only open in the summer, MarineLand Theme Park is second only to Falls themselves in its popularity as an attraction. Here, you’ll get to meet, touch and even feed friendly beluga whales; you can also pet and feed bison, deer and elk at the land animal exhibit. Enjoy the antics of dolphins, walruses, sea lions and beluga whales while you watch the theme park’s action-packed show. Underwater-viewing walkways let you get up close and personal with killer whales. Ride thrilling amusement rides, including the Sky Screamer, the world’s tallest triple tower ride, which will take you 137.2 metres into the air. You’ll get a spectacular view of the Falls — for a few moments, before the Sky Screamer plummets you up and down at speeds as fast as 96 km/h.
“Ripley’s Believe It or Not” Museum
The “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” Museum is just one of many Ripley’s attractions in Niagara Falls. Since 1963, it’s been considered the best museum in Niagara Falls. Stop in and peruse more than 800 oddities, including shrunken heads, two-headed animals and the rarest egg in the world. See some of the world’s funniest headstone engravings, or visit the Niagara Theatre where you can learn more about some of the intrepid — and, in some cases, careless — folks who have actually gone over the Falls. If you’re travelling with kids, they’ll love the interactive educational displays in Ripley’s Wacky Explorative Room.
Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens
Ten minutes north of the Falls themselves, on the Niagara Parkway, you’ll find the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens. Since 1936, this 40-hectare garden has been home to beautiful perennials like azaleas and rhododendrons, a parterre garden, herbs, vegetables and a rose garden featuring more than 2,400 specimens. Admission is free, but for a fee, you can relax on a guided tour of the gardens given from a horse-drawn carriage.
Butterfly Conservatory
Within the grounds of the Botanical Gardens, you’ll find the Butterfly Conservatory. With its more than 2,000 brightly coloured tropical butterflies, the Butterfly Conservatory is an attraction in itself. Bask in the company of 45 different species of butterflies living in a tropical habitat. A self-guided tour of the Conservatory’s 180-metre walkway is available.
Floral Clock
Also located on the Niagara Parkway, the Floral Clock was constructed in 1950 by Ontario Hydro and it’s now almost as often photographed as the Falls themselves. The clock was inspired by the floral clock in Princes’ Street Gardens in Edinburgh, which was built in 1903. The Floral Clock in Niagara Falls is four times as large as the one in Scotland, with a width of 12.2 metres. The clock’s hour hand is 4.42 metres long, its minute hand is 5.33 metres long and its second hand is 6.4 metres long.
The Niagara Falls Floral Clock is replanted each year with 15,000 to 20,000 annuals and carpet plants. The design of the clock changes every year, and it’s checked regularly to ensure its continued accuracy.
Westminster chimes that ring every 15 minutes are found in a tower at the rear of the clock. Sometimes the door to the clock tower is left open so visitors can glimpse the clock’s mechanism, and see pictures of most of the Floral Clock’s past face designs.
Niagara Falls is well known for its spectacular waterfalls sitting on the border of the U.S. and Canada.
