Don’t get me wrong, I love the casino life. I thoroughly enjoy playing Texas Hold’em and blackjack. I love the atmosphere, the free drinks, the noise, the exhilarating adrenaline rush of feeling like a movie star when you’re hot and when I’m at home, I’ll even admit to catching myself playing free casino games on my desktop like Lightning Balls jackpot game (then I’ll get back to serious stuff like updating my Facebook status). But as someone who both lives in and was raised in Las Vegas, the casino life can get real old, real fast.
Vegas Baby!
That is why i encourage more families to visit Sin City (God, I hate that nickname) and see beneath the surface of our multi-dimensional desert oasis through my eyes. Unfortunately, many people still associate our culturally wealthy city with mobsters beating the crap out of sneaky card counters and are completely ignorant of our rich selection of attractions which include museums, shows, and collections.
So I have compiled a short list of my favorite Las Vegas attractions for your reading pleasure:
Beyond the Casinos, Exploring Las Vegas
Adventure Canyon at Buffalo Bill’s Description
We love this wild western themed water ride which includes electronic guns to shoot bandits. But don’t get too confident. These bandits will shoot back at you with water. The finale boasts a breathtaking thirty five foot drop that guarantees you will get completely drenched. If you’re too much of a wuss to hop on the ride, for only a quarter you can stand on the side and shoot at your friend (who’s probably made fun of you for not joining anyway).
Adventuredome at Circus Details
As the largest indoor theme park in the United States, the Adventuredome’s five and a half acre layout features old school carnival rides, thrill rides, mini-golf, laser tag, an arcade, bumper cars, midway booths, clown shows and more. The Adventuredome was designed with ultra high ceilings, natural lighting, and canyon fixtures offering the facade of being outdoors without actually being outdoors making it ideal for all weather conditions.
The Auto Collection
If you’re a car freak (or even if you’re not), you’ll surely enjoy the Auto collection inside the Quad Resort and Casino. The Auto Collection displays some three hundred classic cars including muscle cars, racing cars, and even Military vehicles. There’s something really cool about getting your picture taken with an old school Rolls Royce, a vintage Ferrari or a Volkswagen Beetle. To bring the nostalgia home, visitors can watch old car commercials from back in the day.
Discovery Children’s Museum
Anyone who said that science is boring has never been to the Discovery Children’s Museum in downtown Las Vegas. Imagine nine themed exhibition halls including (my favorite) Water World which naturally integrates learning and play stations with water wheels, whirlpools, and turbines. If your youngster thinks he’s a sleuth, you can bring him over to the Solve It! Mystery Town. This station allows the patrons to stimulate their investigative skills solving various mysteries laid out for them. And finally, if you want to understand the trials and tribulations of being a grown up, send the little one to Eco City. This mini city includes a bank, airport, and a grocery store. They learn how to spend and save money (which will hopefully come in handy when passing by the gift shop).
The Aquarium at the Silverton Hotel
This one hundred and seventeen thousand gallon reef aquarium features over four thousand species of exotic fish swimming in harmony. Personally, I could watch them all day. But if you have a daughter or niece who has either watched the Little Mermaid or has any slight interest in mermaids, you’re in for a serious treat. What makes this aquarium truly unique is its world famous mermaids. These are real women dressed like mermaids who swim around the aquarium interacting with spectators through the window while doing flips, turns, swimming with the exotic sea creatures, and blowing bubbles.
