From sampling local delicacies to exploring Imperial architecture and fine art museums, there’s no end to the number of activities available to you when you visit Vienna. With so much to see and do, you’ll no doubt want to pack in as much activity as possible, so here are just a few must-do tours you can take part in on your next trip out there…
- Walking wine tours
With acres of rolling countryside dedicated to growing fine wines, it’s not surprising that there are so many wine and brewery tours in the area. While some of you may prefer a self-guided tour around some typical Viennese taverns, one of the most popular tours is the vineyard hike. For a truly authentic experience of Viennese life, a private guide will take you through the slopes of the Vienna Woods where the vineyards form part of the landscape. You can enjoy stunning views of the city as well as the River Danube, before being taken to Kahlenbergerdorf, a former wine village.
- The Vienna Food Walk
Food is a great way to experience a new culture, and when you take the Vienna Food Walk, you’ll be able to blend in with the natives by trying a wide variety of traditional Viennese fayre. You’ll visit several eateries over three hours, trying many different dishes that have helped build this great capital. You’ll also be able to sample local wines and beers as perfect pairings, as your expert guide tells you about the history of Viennese cuisine, plus some interesting stories from the country’s past. After walking and sampling the treats you can book a taxi in Vienna to get yourself back to your hotel.
- Self-guided Innerstadt tour
If you want to see as much of the Old Town as possible during your stay, then the Innerstadt tour is essential. You’ll be able to take in everything from the iconic, gothic St Stephen’s Cathedral, to the thriving food market of Naschmarkt. A self-guided version is the best option, as you can take your time, but we’d also recommend that you save some of the sites for the evening, such as the Vienna State Opera. This is best viewed after dark when the lighting makes for a truly magical sight. Why not heighten the experience more by picking up some tickets for a ballet or opera while you’re here.
- MuseumsQuartier tour
If you’re a true culture vulture and history buff, then a guided tour of the famous MuseumsQuartier is an absolute must. Not only will you be taken back in time as you marvel at the perfectly preserved examples of Baroque architecture and Imperial artwork, but you’ll also experience the more modern, contemporary side of Vienna and its up and coming artists. You could choose to book your very own tour guide for a personalised experience, or simply take the audio tour that will walk you around the various exhibits.
