Montreal, Quebec is hands down the most culturally significant and interesting city in Canada. With its robust history over the centuries, its unique positioning as Canada’s capital for bilingualism, and its all around cultural awesomeness, Montreal is a can’t miss city for anyone who is making their way up to the Great White North. To get a sense of how one could spend a day in Montreal I spoke with JustFly, an online travel agency. They gave me a day long itinerary to exploring the best part of Le Belle Province.

Outdoor activities in Montreal - Mont Royal

Breakfast: Cosmo’s

For starters, Cosmos is a bit of a gruff spot according to JustFly’s review. The waitresses might make fun of you, you might have to wait a bit, and you’ll question how such a beat up spot stays in business. But then you’ll eat the food. The perfect embodiment of a “greasy spoon” joint, the potatoes are rich, their collections of messy “mashes” are absolutely filling, and their sandwiches are delicious. It’s the perfect late night, early morning spot and ideal for a great conversation over breakfast with the regulars who feed off the spastic energy of the staff. All in all, a great start to the day.

Morning: Atwater Market

Now, after Cosmos food might be the farthest thing from your mind, but Atwater Market is a great place to explore on a full or empty stomach. Check out the various local vendors offering massive selections of fresh fruit, vegetables, and meat and stuff your face with samples. In addition, there are some very great cheese and maple syrup shops offering unique flavours you can enjoy there, or bring home to spoil your friends and family according to JustFly.

Lunch: Campanelli’s

Campanelli’s is an establishment in the Saint-Henri area. With years of experience in the coffee and sandwich scene, this place has some of the best sandwiches in the city. While JustFly says the sandwiches are the best part, Campanella has no problem bragging about their meatballs, which they say are the best in the city.

Afternoon: The Plateau

A labyrinth of green spaces, vintage shops, and cafes, The Plateau is a must-see neighbourhood in Montreal. If shopping is your thing, make your way up and down both Saint Laurent and Saint Denis streets. If you want a relaxing afternoon you can make your way to Parc Lafontaine or Parc Mont Royal, both of which are two of the best parks in the city. If you have to choose, go with Parc Mont Royal, as its scenic lookouts over the city are breathtaking.

Evening: Montreal Canadiens Game

There is nothing more Montreal than seeing a Montreal Canadiens game. With over 100 years of history, The Montreal Canadiens, despite their atrocious record this year, are still a sight to see if you find yourself in Montreal. Even if you don’t like hockey, it’s a great area to be in, with many bars, restaurants and historic areas nearby to explore.
