The weather is warm, the water is clear and the locals are super friendly! We were lucky enough to visit Long Island in the Bahamas for a freediving event called Vertical Blue. During our stay we managed to squish in a couple of boat trips and a few afternoon beach chill out sessions.
Water adventures in Long Island, Bahamas
If you enjoy a relaxed and remote atmosphere, with beautiful beaches and amazing sunsets then we highly recommend visiting Long Island in the Bahamas.
Tips for visiting Long Island in the Bahamas
- You will need to hire a car (there are no public buses)
- Deadmans Cay airport is the closest to Deans Blue hole
- Carry insect repellent with you, because the sand-flies and mosquitos go crazy from 4pm onwards
Boating and fishing from Long Island in the Bahamas
If you want to go out on a boat to explore or go fishing, we highly recommended being taken out by a guide. There are a few rules and regulations regarding fish that are protected, plus it would be embarrassing to strand your boat on one of the many sand bars! We went with Locksley.
Deans Blue Hole during Vertical Blue 2014
The Vertical Blue event took place at Deans Blue Hole which is a whopping 663 feet (202 meters) deep. More details about Vertical Blue 2014 and Moss’s role on the safety team are available on his website.
As an extra note – Rubbish
I was extremely horrified at the amount of rubbish washing up on the beaches! I enjoy wandering a beach and picking up shells, not rubbish! Every morning before Vertical Blue would kick off, I was walking the beach at Deans Blue Hole with my rubbish bag. Some days I would only get one bag full, but sadly I would often have to make multiple trips to the bin and would have to constantly pick up trash and tiny pieces of plastic as the tide proceeded to go out. The locals believe some of this rubbish comes from cruise boats 🙁
