London is well known for its museums, attractions, shows and culture, but what’s on offer in the UK’s capital city for adrenaline junkies and theme park addicts? Although, due to the nature of a built up city, there are no theme parks as such in the city centre, there are 5 super thrilling destinations to visit within around 20 miles of London.
The closest bona fide theme park to the capital, Chessington World of Adventures has come a very long way since its original incarnation as Chessington Zoo. These days the site boasts a family-friendly theme park, the zoo itself and a sea life centre.
Chessington is notable for its efforts to include thrill rides for relatively young children – on Vampire, for instance, the height restriction is only 1.1m – and for a great mix of adrenaline pumping rides and gentler rides the whole family can enjoy.
Older children and adults will no doubt make a bee-line for some of Chessington’s signature rides. Dragon’s Fury is a dizzying rollercoaster where the cars spin and twist as well as following the tracks, while the disorientating Rameses Revenge ends by dunking you face first in a set of fountains – definitely one for those who like to get wet!
Originally built in the 70s on a partially flooded gravel pit, Thorpe Park quickly earned a reputation as the UK’s premier theme park for thrill rides – it is, after all, home to the UK fastest and tallest launch rollercoaster, the terrifying Stealth, which accelerates at a boggling 0-80mph in 1.8 seconds.
The Swarm is the only backward winged coaster in the world, and indeed the only winged coaster in the UK, featuring 5 inversions in the course of the ride.
How about the UK’s tallest log flume, Loggers Leap – or Saw, the only horror film themed roller coaster, which also happens to hold the record for the steepest freefall drop in the world? Thorpe Park is definitely packed with thrills and spills, but do note that many rides are not suitable for small children.
One theme park within easy reach of London which most definitely is suitable for small kids, however, is Legoland.
Legoland doesn’t have any adrenaline packed thrill rides for adults, but it is packed with rides which younger children can enjoy. From the Dragon mini rollercoaster to traditional favourites like carousels and water rides, most rides have either no height restrictions, or restrictions of around 0.9 – 1.1m.
What it lacks in adult-orientated adrenaline, Legoland more than makes up for in activities the family can enjoy. There’s a climbing wall, gold panning, stunt shows and Drench Towers, the largest water play structure in the UK. Plus, of course, lots of opportunities for building and creative play. What’s not to love?
For thrills in the heart of London, you can’t beat the London Dungeons. Although not a theme park per se, this very scary attraction does have several chilling rides. The adrenaline factor is boosted, of course, by the setting, special effects and the excellent scare actors who are an integral part of the experience.
From the frightening lift descent as you begin your tour, right through to the public hanging (gravity drop ride) at the end, your heart will be in your mouth throughout. Along the way you’ll encounter numerous foul and gruesome characters, plus – new for 2014 – a highly creepy water ride depicting Ann Boleyn’s boat ride to the Tower.
A very different experience to rollercoasters and epic rides, but one which you’ll never forget. Possibly too scary in parts for nervous little ones, though!
Also not a typical theme park, but again, definitely worth it for the adrenaline fuelled experience. Go Ape is in Enfield, just a few minute’s walk from Cockfosters on the Piccadilly Line. This beautiful woodland park is packed with family outdoor adventures – think zip lines, treetop rope bridges and Tarzan swings.
During your experience at Go Ape, you’ll uncover a new sense of enthusiasm – and probably some new courage too, as you journey through the forest via swings, ropes, tunnels, wires and all manner of other challenges. It’s fantastic, healthy, outdoor fun for the family, but children must be over 10 years old and over 1.4m to take part.
So there you have it; thrill seekers in London have plenty of choice. Your only dilemma now is which terrifying experience to choose – which would be your favourite?
