It’s the one message we all dread to hear when we travel…

Can you call home as soon as you can?

You even know that before they pick up the phone it is not going to be good news and that you will usually end up in tears hundreds or thousands of miles from the people you need the most.

We received that call this week. Unfortunately it is not for the first time this year. Having already rushed back to New Zealand earlier in the year to be at the bedside of a loved one we didn’t expect to receive a similar call again so soon.

While travelling there is no worse feeling than being stuck on the other side of the world with limited funds and a sick family member that you want to visit so desperately.

What do you do in this situation? Do you follow your heart and rush to the airport to catch the next flight home? Or do you heed the advice that you most often get from your family which is to soldier on and try and enjoy yourself overseas?

Unfortunately I don’t think anyone can answer that one.

So for now we lie awake late into the night with our phone close at hand. We smile at each other, hold hands and hope that everything will work out and that we made the right decision to stay where we are.

Have you ever been in this situation? What did you do?
