Finding clean water is a necessity for every traveller. And trying to find clean water while travelling in foreign Third World countries is even harder. That is why I packed the Purificup for my 75 day overland adventure trip in Africa.

I travelled with a group from Nairobi to Cape Town and while we did have access to some clean water, most of it had to be treated in some way before we are able to drink it. Fortunately, with the Purificup I never went thirsty.

What is the Purificup?

Purificup ReviewThe PurifiCup is a portable water filtration system that helps reduce the waste of plastic bottles. It provides a light and portable system that filters and purifies water in a single process. It eliminates chemical and biological contaminants, along with 99.99% of over 600 types of bacteria, including E-Coli.

Basically it meant that while others were fussing around with fire pits and boiling water, or adding nasty tasting purification tablets, I was busy gulping down my fresh water. Plus it all packed neatly into my backpack and required no additional attachments.

All I had to do was fill it up and let it filter out the bad stuff. Totally essential for any outdoor adventure lovers and world travellers.

PurifiCup Specifications

  • Total Capacity: 100 to 150 cups / 41.6 liters / 11 gallons
  • Total Weight: 305 grams / 10.76 ounce
  • Flow Rate: 0.2 liter per minute
  • Cup Volume: 10 fluid ounces

Things I Loved about the Purificup:

  •  It was quick and simple to use. Whenever we pulled into a campground I could just fill up the top cup and let gravity do the work for me.
  • It is heavy duty plastic so that it never broke even while it was getting tossed around in my backpack.
  • Unlike other water purification systems that use fancy lights but doesn’t remove the grit and dirt, the Purificup removd all the heavy metals, organics, and anything floating around too.
  • It is a tidy package and I even managed to donate mine to one of the orphanages that we visited.

What I didn’t like:

  • While it can technically be used instead of your drink bottle, I didn’t want to carry both around as my metal reusable drink bottle is just awesome for adventure activities.
  • If you can’t find a flat spot to set it up then it is pretty hard to use properly. Not so bad when camping, but if you are hiking a mountain or something it can be a bit tougher.
  • It does take a while for the water to filter through. But at least it’s not boiling hot when you go to drink it!

You can see more or order a PurifiCup for yourself on the official PurifiCup website.

Disclosure: I received a demo unit of the PurifiCup Natural Water Series for free from PurifiCup as coordinated by Deep Creek Public Relations.
