Christmas in the Balearics is full of happiness, laughter and very tasty food, all played out in the Mediterranean climate. There is so much choice of food, because there are so many different tapas, all accompanied by the most delicious Spanish wine.
In Spanish, Christmas Eve is ‘La Noche Buena’ (literally Good Night) and it is such a feast that it takes two to three hours to indulge in all the courses. With cheap flights to Majorca and Menorca, Christmas can be a gastronomic delight in the sunshine, courtesy of Jet2.com.
What to Eat at Christmas in the Balearics
Start with Soup
Escudella Nadal is a hearty rustic soup stew with several kinds of meat, pork, beef, lamb, and chicken and lots of vegetables including; turnips, cabbage, carrots, celery, kale, parsnips and potatoes.
Some chefs use the foot of the animal to give a gelatinous quality to the soup. This is a very old soup recipe and the ingredients vary from region to region.
Delicious Tapas
Gambas a la Plancha are plump prawns that are salted in their shells, quickly fried in an iron pan and served with a squeeze of lemon. Usually accompanied by a chilled white wine, fino sherry or refreshing cool beer.
Artichokes with fish
Artichokes are served with a great variety of seafood, comprising anything from clams, tuna, salmon, squid, or anchovies. They are often garnished with capers and piquillo peppers.
Champinones al ajillo
This tasty tapa is made from oyster or chanterelle mushrooms, which are cooked with olive oil, garlic, flat leaf parsley and a medium or dry Spanish sherry for a delicious experience.
Pintxos de Ahumado con fruta – Smoked fish and fresh fruit
Smoked mackerel and salmon are combined with kiwi fruit, strawberries, raspberries, green and red grapes, olives and, of course, lemon juice. This is an amazingly refreshing and uniquely Spanish dish.
Turkey and Ham
These two meats are on the menu in Majorca and Menorca on Christmas Day, with vegetables and all the trimmings. Cordero Asado or Roast lamb is slow-cooked and delicious.
For fish lovers ,there is ‘Merluza en salsa verde’ which is cod in a piquant green sauce. For people who love traditional Spanish cooking, a great choice is Pollo Campurriano, which is a chicken dish with paprika, ham and peppers, usually accompanied by rice.
Finally, there is fish a la Mallorquina, which can be any fish crowned with vegetables to flavour the piscine treat, or bacalao – the famous salt fish dish.
