No, I don’t think so.  Well I have my doubts anyway.  I can feel the bristles rising now on 4 million supporters back home.  The torrent of abuse I am going to get makes me doubt whether I should post this at all. I can see my citizenship being revoked.

Now don’t get me wrong, I would love for them to do it this time.  God knows we need it.  But going on track record and the pressure from being at home, I just think we are doomed.  Maybe I am just cynical, but I actually think my lack of support extends from being overseas while the Rugby World Cup is played at home.  I am sure I would be swept up in the black tide of support and excitement if I was back at home.  But being thousands of km away just doesn’t cut the mustard. I feel isolated and all the talk is about Jonny bloody Wilkinson missing his kicks in their last match. In fact, we better not lose to England or I will never live it down out here.

My set up at work

We are a passionate bunch at the best of times.  And when it comes to rugby there is no exception.  When it comes to the Rugby World Cup, well this is just a totally different level altogether. The stats are that nearly every single household in New Zealand was tuned into the Opening Ceremony and opening pool game against Tonga.

However, I just hope that every Kiwi understands that this event is not just for the rugby.  The best thing out of the entire event is the exposure little old New Zealand is getting. All the talk over here is of the English team going white water rafting, out for pints after the game and bungy jumping.  These stories alone will bring in millions of dollars of tourism revenues and is just part of the huge marketing campaign going on in New Zealand at the moment. So win or lose, don’t make asses of yourselves. Stand up and be proud of holding such a highly esteemed tournament in our fantastic country.

Back to the matter at heart.  No matter what the results, I am still a Kiwi and I will be up at the crack of dawn to watch and support my team.  C’mon All Blacks prove me wrong!
